Great gnarled trees or fantastically shaped rocks have come to be regarded as the abode of a spirit or a manifestaion of deity and so the statement in the hymn is literally true:-
"The heathen in his blindness
Bows down to wood and stone."
聖なる木の下で祈願する女性
大きな節くれだった木々や奇怪な形をした岩などは精霊のすみか、あるいは神性のあらわれと見なされるようになりました。ですから賛美歌の一節は文字通り真実なのです。
“おぉ 異教徒は無知のうちに
樹や岩に頭を垂りて”
