Slide No. 34

In a pine grove by the seashore near Naha, is a little group of tombs of interest to every American, for here are buried six sailors from the famous expedition under Commodore Perry, which opened Japan to foreign intercourse. They are fast falling into ruin and their condition is in marked contrast with the care bestowed on the native graves close by.
