Ancient Tomb Showing Hole in Door for Spirit

This picture shows an old tomb in the country. Here probably lie the bones of many generations. After death, the body is placed in the tomb in a coffin of wood. The door is closed and plastered up, leaving a small hole for the spirit to go in and out. Unless another death occurs in the family, the tomb is not opened for three years or even more. Then it is opened and the women of the family take the remains and wash the bones in shochu - strong rice whiskey.
扉に霊のための穴が開いた古代の墓
この写真はこの国の古い墓を撮ったものです。おそらく何世代もの人間の骨がここに横たわっていることでしょう。死後、遺体は木製の棺桶に入れられ、墓の中に置かれます。扉は閉められてしっくいで塗り固められるのですが、小さな穴が開けてあって霊が出入りできるようになっています。一族の中でまた誰か死なない限り、三年以上その扉が開かれることはありません。それから扉を開かれ、一族の女性たちが遺骸を手に取り、焼酎—強い米のウィスキー—で遺骨を洗うのです。
