Here we have a scene in a country village market. The piles in the foreground are long white radishes. Both buyers and sellers are chiefly women. Nearly all the retail and much of the larger business of the islands is in their hands. So useless from an economic standpoint do the men seem that it is a common saying that a woman who becomes widow early in life always gets rich. As an actual fact, some of the richest householders of Naha are widows.
村の市場、大根
これはある村の市場の一場面です。手前に積み重ねられているのは大根です。買い手も売り手も主に女性です。列島の小売のほとんどすべてが、またもっと大きな取引のうちでも多くが、女性の手によって行われています。経済的立場からは男性があまりにも無能なように思われるため、早い時期に未亡人になった女性は常に金持ちになる、と一般に言われています。事実、那覇の最大の資産家のうち何人かは未亡人です。
