The two men in this picture are not snake-charmers exhibiting their skill for the amusement of people. Loo Choo is famous for its poisonous snakes and the Japanese government pays a liberal bounty for each one killed. These two men are professional snakecatchers. Please save, however, any shudders this picture may give you. They are handling the perfectly harmless snakes which do the island a great deal of benefit as rat-catchers.

この写真の二人の男性は、人々を楽しませるために技を披露している蛇使いなどではありません。琉球は毒蛇で有名で、日本政府は一匹殺すごとに高額の賞金を払っています。この二人はプロの蛇取りなのです。ですが、この写真を見て身震いなどなさらないでください。彼らがつかんでいるのは全く無害で、ねずみ取りとして島に多大な恩恵を与えてくれている蛇なのです。
