Festival Decorations, Naha

Slide No. 39

Though these festivals are always held in honor of some shrine, the only part the god of the shrine plays in them is to keep "open house", as it were. Nearly every one visits the shrine on one of the days of the festival. He makes an offering of a few coins, claps his hands, bows his head a moment and whispers a prayer or an invocation and then says to himself, "There, that duty is attended to." The rest of the day is given up wholly to pleasure. This accounts for the street decorations seen here.
